Niagara Falls: The Worldโs Most Famous Waterfall
The sound hits before the sight. A deep, constant roar that fills the air around Queen Victoria Park, and then you round the corner on the Niagara Parkway and there it is โ a vast curved curtain of white water, 670 metres wide and 57 metres high, vanishing into a permanent mist cloud that catches every available rainbow.
Niagara Falls is one of those places where the cliche photographs do not do justice to the reality. Standing beside Horseshoe Falls, the ground vibrates underfoot. The water is moving at 168,000 cubic metres per minute, enough to fill an Olympic pool every 0.6 seconds. It is overwhelming in the best possible way.
Getting Around
Wego bus runs a hop-on/hop-off service between all the main attractions along the Niagara Parkway โ $8 CAD for a day pass, well worth it. The core attractions (falls viewpoints, Maid of the Mist, Journey Behind the Falls, Table Rock) are also walkable in good weather.
For Niagara-on-the-Lake: Rent a bike from the Niagara Parkway Cycle rental station ($20-35 CAD) and cycle the 20km parkway between the falls and NOTL โ one of Ontarioโs best cycling routes.
Things to Do
Maid of the Mist โ The iconic boat tour that departs from the base of the falls and motors into the spray at the foot of Horseshoe Falls. Blue rain ponchos provided (necessary). Open May through November. $29.35 CAD adults. No reservation needed โ boats run continuously.
Journey Behind the Falls โ Tunnels carved through the limestone behind Table Rock take you to observation portals literally behind the waterfall. The roar in the tunnels is intense. Open year-round. $23.50 CAD adults.
Queen Victoria Park โ The best free viewpoint. The curved path from the American Falls overlook to Table Rock (above Horseshoe Falls) gives continuous close-up views. The park is illuminated nightly. Free entry.
Niagara-on-the-Lake โ 20km north of the falls, this charming Loyalist town is the antidote to the tourist strip. Queen Street lined with independent shops, the Shaw Festival theatre (May-November), and proximity to 80+ local wineries. Inniskillin and Peller Estates offer excellent tours and tastings.
Skylon Tower Observation Deck โ 236m above the falls for aerial perspective. The revolving restaurant at the top has views straight down into Horseshoe Falls. $18.50 CAD adults.
Where to Eat
Edgewaters Tap and Grill โ Best casual dining with falls views. Fish and chips with Ontario Lake Erie perch, local craft beer, terrasse seating. ~$20-30 CAD mains.
Treadwell Farm to Table Cuisine (NOTL) โ The best restaurant on the Niagara peninsula. Locally sourced everything, extraordinary wine list from Niagara cellars. Reserve ahead. ~$50-80 CAD mains.
Brunch at AG Inspired Cuisine โ Contemporary Canadian brunch in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Eggs from nearby farms, local preserves, exceptional coffee. ~$20-35 CAD.
Niagara Brewing Company โ The best lunch stop in the falls district. Good craft beer, solid pub food, falls-area local produce. ~$18-28 CAD mains.
Inniskillin Winery โ Not a restaurant, but the ice wine tasting experience ($20 CAD) is extraordinary. Canada invented commercial ice wine, and Inniskillin is the pioneer. The 2022 Vidal Ice Wine is exceptional.
Where to Stay
Sheraton Fallsview Hotel ($200-450 CAD/night) โ Falls-view rooms face Horseshoe Falls directly. Book a Fallsview room and itโs worth every dollar โ watching the illumination show from your bed is something youโll remember.
Marriott on the Falls ($180-380 CAD/night) โ Connected to Casino Niagara. Falls view rooms available. Well-managed, consistently good.
Americana Conference Resort ($100-200 CAD/night) โ Best mid-range option: indoor water park for families, multiple pools, 10-minute walk from falls. Good family value.
Scottโs Pro Tips
Logistics: Go to Queen Victoria Park first, before any attraction, to get oriented. Table Rock Welcome Centre is the hub for Journey Behind the Falls tickets. Buy the Adventure Pass bundle ($50-60 CAD) if youโre doing multiple attractions.
Best Time: June through September for warm weather. The illumination is year-round. Avoid the Canada Day long weekend (July 1) and US July 4th weekend โ massive crowds and hotel prices double.
Getting Around: The Wego bus day pass is the most efficient option. For wine country, rent a bike or hire a designated driver โ tasting rooms at multiple wineries add up.
Money and ATMs: US dollars often accepted in the tourist strip, though Canadian dollars at the correct rate are better. ATMs throughout the Fallsview district. Niagara-on-the-Lake is cash and card friendly.
Safety and Health: Stay on designated viewing areas โ the Niagara Gorge below the falls is off-limits for good reason. The current is extraordinarily powerful. Niagara General Hospital is 5 minutes from the falls.
Packing: Bring layers โ the mist from the falls creates its own microclimate and it gets cold quickly even in summer. Water shoes are useful for the observation deck spray. Your phone will get wet at Maid of the Mist.
Local Culture: The Clifton Hill tourist strip is aggressively commercial โ wax museums, ripleyโs oddities, and fast food chains. Accept it, ignore it, and focus on the parkway side. Niagara-on-the-Lake is the sophisticated antidote โ a completely different world 20 minutes north.
