Getting There
Whistler is 125km north of Vancouver on the Sea-to-Sky Highway (Hwy 99) โ€” one of the world's most scenic drives. Allow 2 hours by car. Epic Rides and Whistler Mountaineer run buses from Vancouver ($30-50 CAD each way).

Whistler: North Americaโ€™s Mountain Playground

Thereโ€™s a moment on the Peak 2 Peak Gondola when youโ€™re suspended 436 metres above the valley floor, the gondola drifting silently over the gap between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, and the scale of the place finally hits you. Two complete mountains. Over 200 marked runs. Eight thousand acres of terrain. And this is just the skiing.

Whistler hosted the alpine skiing events for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and built a reputation as the worldโ€™s top-rated ski resort. It deserves it. But the summer Whistler โ€” warmer, cheaper, quieter, and equally spectacular โ€” is the version that surprises most visitors.

Getting Around

The Village is pedestrian-only โ€” park your car and walk everywhere. The Village Stroll connects Whistler Village, Village North, and Upper Village. Creekside (the quieter base area 3km south) is connected by the WAVE bus.

The Sea-to-Sky Highway drive from Vancouver (2 hrs) is half the experience โ€” pull over at Shannon Falls (64m waterfall, right beside the road), Squamish (stawamus Chief viewpoint), and Brandywine Falls Provincial Park.

Things to Do

Whistler Blackcomb Skiing โ€” Two peaks with 8,171 acres of skiable terrain, 200+ marked runs, and 16 alpine bowls. The Whistler Blackcomb ski pass is Ikon Pass compatible. Peak ski season runs November through April. Book lessons at the Whistler Mountain Ski School โ€” the instruction quality is excellent.

Peak 2 Peak Gondola โ€” In summer, this world-record gondola connects the two mountains at alpine elevation. Glass-bottom gondola cars reveal the valley floor 436m below. Epic mountain and glacier views. Included with sightseeing lift ticket ($59 CAD summer).

Whistler Mountain Bike Park โ€” North Americaโ€™s best lift-served mountain bike terrain: 80+ trails, 1,530m of vertical, flow trails for beginners and technical lines for experts. Day pass $85 CAD, bike and protective gear rentals available. Open June through October.

Lost Lake โ€” Walk or cycle to this lake in the forest at the edge of the Village. Swimming beach, paddleboard rentals, picnic areas. Completely free. The 5km Lost Lake Loop Trail is a perfect morning run or leisurely cycle.

Garibaldi Provincial Park โ€” 30-minute drive south, this provincial park offers some of the finest backcountry hiking in British Columbia. The Garibaldi Lake trail (9km return) ends at a stunning blue-green glacial lake. Day hike in; camping requires reservation.

Where to Eat

Araxi โ€” Whistlerโ€™s most celebrated restaurant: BC seafood, local game, exceptional wine list. The oyster bar at the bar is outstanding and more casual than the dining room. Reserve well ahead. ~$60-90 CAD mains.

Bearfoot Bistro โ€” The legendary sabrage experience (opening Champagne with a sword) and game tasting menu. One of Canadaโ€™s most theatrical dining experiences. ~$100-150 CAD per person.

Sachi Sushi โ€” Best sushi in Whistler. The BC roll (salmon, avocado, cucumber) and salmon sashimi are exceptional. ~$25-45 CAD.

La Cantina โ€” Casual and consistently great for Mexican food in the Village. Fish tacos, burritos, margaritas. ~$15-25 CAD.

Splitz Grill โ€” Beloved local burger joint after a big ski day. Double smash burger, sweet potato fries, milkshakes. ~$15-22 CAD. No reservations.

Where to Stay

Fairmont Chateau Whistler ($350-900 CAD/night) โ€” The grand chateau at the base of Blackcomb. Ski-in/ski-out in winter. Heated outdoor pool open year-round. The most complete resort hotel in Canada.

Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside ($200-450 CAD/night) โ€” All-suite hotel steps from Whistler Village gondola. Kitchen suites great for families. Mountain views.

HI Whistler Hostel ($45-80 CAD/night) โ€” Budget option 2.5km from the village with regular shuttle connections. Clean, well-run. Good social atmosphere.

Scottโ€™s Pro Tips

Logistics: Book accommodation and lift tickets together online โ€” packages save significant money. Whistler.com is the official booking platform. Parking in the Village is expensive ($20-25 CAD/day) โ€” park at the Day Lots and walk.

Best Time: Ski: late December through March for best snow conditions. Summer: July and August for biking and hiking. September is shoulder season โ€” excellent weather, empty trails, 30% lower prices.

Getting Around: Village is walkable. WAVE bus is free for resort guests. Ski on, ski off is key for accommodation โ€” saves 20 minutes per day getting to slopes.

Money and ATMs: Everything in Whistler is expensive. A ski day including lift ticket ($160 CAD), rentals ($80 CAD), and food ($50 CAD) can easily hit $300 CAD per person. Budget accordingly.

Safety and Health: Know your ski ability level honestly. Stay on marked runs until you know the mountain. In summer, full-face helmets and body armour are mandatory on the Bike Park advanced trails. First aid is stationed throughout the resort.

Packing: In ski season: multiple base layers, good ski socks (merino wool), waterproof gloves, goggles, and a neck warmer. In summer: hiking layers, waterproof shell, mountain bike pads if you plan to ride blues or blacks.

Local Culture: Whistler is international and relaxed. Apres-ski culture is strong โ€” most bars fill from 3-7pm. The village closes up relatively early โ€” this is an outdoor activity destination, not a late-night scene. Respect wildlife on mountain trails: bears, coyotes, and marmots are common.
